The music on this CD was inspired by several styles and techniques of modern dance. As staff percussionist for three years at the California
Institute of the Arts I worked closely with several instructors from various technical backgrounds in the Modern Dance community. Similarly to the
classes I performed for, the approach of this CD is highly improvisational. In developing this album, most pieces started out with the exact percussion set-up I used for my classes. I then laid down tracks,
beginning with a fundamental musical element such as tempo, timbre, or time signature. After the basic track was recorded, I layered other percussion over that track, often with little pre-conceived idea of the
direction the piece would go; this way, the songs evolve organically and preserve the spontaneity that an accompanist can bring to a class. All of the music was created with acoustic percussion instruments. There are no synths, loops, sound modules, or other electronic instruments used.
