Marimba
Virginia Tate (Paul Smadbeck)
- I feature the middle section of this piece because of its lyricism, coupled with just
plain-ol'-chops.
Bourree in B Minor (Bach)
Invention in A Minor (Bach)
Frogs (Keiko Abe) |
Multiple Percussion
Anvil Chorus (David Lang) - uses found metals played by all 4
limbs, written as an imitation of blacksmith shop.
Encounters III (William Kraft) - with trumpeter Beth Cooper.
Programmatic piece about wartime battle.
Histoire du Soldat (Stravinsky)- solo excerpt from
"Triumphant March of the Devil." Uses bass drum, high and
low snare drum, and field drum (all w/ snares off). A balance
between evenness and a 3 vs. 4 feel was essential , as the
meter changes constantly.
Final Encounter (Movie Soundtrack - Title Music) - various
percussion. This recording was from a session done in 1998.
This sci-fi picture stars Dean Cain and Thomas Ian Griffith.

Xylophone
Sonata For Xylophone and Piano, 4th Mvmt (Bruce Levine) - Avante Garde style, highly acrobatic piece, utilizing complex polyrhythms, rapid multi-octave leaps interwoven into the piano part. And it still manages to sound like a "real" melody. This was a ton of fun to perform. I had the privilege of premiering this work.
Triplets (George H. Green)
- with marimba quartet accompaniment and vintage drumset.
Porgy and Bess (George Gershwin)
- the short but infamous orchestral excerpt for xylophone. |
Snare Drum
Moby Dick (John Pratt)- Thorough in stroke and roll notation, this work is found in the book "Rudimental Solos for Accomplished Drummers." Quick and relentless, it's one to warm-up for before attempting. |
"World" Percussion
Congas
(Open solo) - one of my favorite instruments in hand drumming
and Latin percussion.
Ghatam
Adi Talam - also includes kanjira, mridangam, and tal cymbals.
Pan/ Steel drums
Pan in A Minor (Lord Kitchener) - 8- piece steel drum band, all
acoustic. I'm playing tenor pan (the melody). This demo is a small
representation of the piece, as the arrangement is about 9
minutes in length. The piece specifically is one of the more
well-known in Trinidad and the world pan community. |
Timpani
Canto (Elliott Carter) - concocted from the closed buzz roll, snare drum sticks, and a profuse amount of pedal work - the glissandi and phrasing is what makes this piece sing.
March (Elliott Carter) - the title is descriptive to its style; listen for the changes in timbre, as the piece requires the repeated flipping back and forth of the mallets from soft head to handle, often with little time to spare.
Timpiana (Saul Goodman) - a swinging timpiani piece (yep, that's right) which emulates bass and melody simultaneously. This is just thetimpani part; drumset and cymbals not included. |
